About The Winery

Château Cantemerle is classified as a Cinquième Cru (Fifth Growth) in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, making it the southernmost classified growth of the Médoc. The estate’s history dates back to at least the 15th century, with its reputation firmly established by the 18th and 19th centuries. After a period of decline in the early 20th century, Cantemerle was revitalised through significant investment in both vineyards and cellar facilities, restoring its standing among the classified estates of the Haut-Médoc.

The vineyards are planted on silica-gravel soils of Quaternary origin. These well-drained, poor soils regulate ripening through heat retention and favour concentration. The vines have an average age of around 35 years, contributing to low yields and strong terroir expression.

The vineyard extends over approximately 90 hectares, predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Vinification takes place in well-equipped cellars combining modern temperature-controlled vats with traditional barrel ageing in oak, including extended maturation in the château’s underground cellars, contributing to the wine’s balance, structure and ageing potential.

On the nose, Château Cantemerle reveals expressive aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum, layered with notes of cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice from oak aging. The palate is structured and elegant, offering flavors of dark berries, graphite, and gentle earthy undertones supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The finish is long, smooth, and poised, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, oak, and spice.
