About The Winery

Château Lafite Rothschild is located in the Pauillac appellation in the northern Médoc, on gravel slopes overlooking the Gironde estuary. The estate is one of the oldest vineyard sites in Bordeaux, with records of the seigneurie of Lafite dating back to 1234. The name “Lafite” derives from the Gascon word “la hite,” meaning a small hill, referring to the gravel rise on which the vineyard stands.

In the 17th century the estate came into the possession of the Ségur family, who significantly expanded the vineyards and established Lafite’s reputation. Through inheritance and marriage the Ségurs assembled one of the most remarkable vineyard holdings in Bordeaux. Alexandre de Ségur married Marie-Thérèse de Clausel, heiress of Château Latour, bringing that estate into the family. Over time the family also controlled Calon-Ségur and briefly Mouton, meaning that by the early 18th century Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, later known as the “Prince of Vines,” owned several of the most important vineyards of the Médoc simultaneously. During this period Lafite gained exceptional prestige in Europe and was frequently served at the royal court of Louis XV, particularly favoured by Madame de Pompadour.

Vinification

After hand harvesting and manual sorting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, with maceration lasting 18 to 25 days. The cellar is designed to vinify separate small vineyard parcels, using concrete vats ranging from 50 to 125 hectolitres. After alcoholic fermentation, the free-run wine is transferred to stainless-steel tanks (30–70 hl) where malolactic fermentation takes place before aging.

On the nose, Château Lafite Rothschild 2010 reveals refined aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum layered with notes of graphite, cedar, tobacco, and subtle spice from careful oak maturation.
