A beautifully sculpted wine which has power and structure, yet huge reserves of plush, refined tannins. Violets pervade the nose together with an inky, opaque hue all pointing to a very long future. Finishes a little dry at the moment but this will resolve with several years of careful cellaring. A great St-Estèphe with masses of class and concentration.” - Decanter 98

About The Winery

Château Montrose is located in the Saint-Estèphe appellation in the northern Médoc, overlooking the Gironde estuary. The estate was established in 1815 by Étienne Théodore Dumoulin, who began planting vines on land previously covered with heather, which gave the property its name “Mont Rose.” In 1855 the château was classified as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux classification. In 1896 the estate was acquired by the Charmolüe family, who owned and managed it for more than a century. In 2006 Château Montrose was purchased by the Bouygues family (Martin and Olivier Bouygues), who invested heavily in vineyard management, cellar modernization and environmental projects at the estate.

The vineyard covers about 95 hectares in a single block surrounding the château, planted mainly with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The terroir consists of deep gravel soils mixed with sand and clay over a clay subsoil, typical for Saint-Estèphe. The proximity of the Gironde estuary helps regulate temperatures and protect the vines from extreme weather. Vineyard work focuses on maintaining soil health and biodiversity, and the estate follows environmentally responsible viticulture. Château Montrose has been certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) level 3, reflecting its environmental management practices.

Vinification 

Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats. The wines are then aged for about 18 months in French oak barrels, with a significant proportion of new oak depending on the vintage. The cellar was extensively modernized in the 2010s, allowing more precise vinification and separate treatment of individual vineyard parcels before final blending.

On the nose, this Saint‑Estèphe reveals rich aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum, layered with notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, graphite, and subtle spice from careful oak aging. The palate is full‑bodied and powerful, offering concentrated flavors of dark fruit, mineral complexity, and earthy undertones supported by firm, refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, poised, and elegant, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, oak, and savory spice.
