“I, Mouton, do not change”

“The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.” - Wine Advocate 98+

About The Winery

Château Mouton Rothschild is located in the Pauillac appellation in the Médoc, about 50 km north-west of Bordeaux on the Left Bank of the Gironde estuary. The estate was purchased in 1853 by Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, who acquired the property then known as Château Brane-Mouton and renamed it Mouton Rothschild. In the 1855 Bordeaux Classification the estate was ranked as a Second Growth. A major turning point came in 1922, when Baron Philippe de Rothschild, great-grandson of Nathaniel, took control of the estate at the age of twenty. He transformed the château’s identity, introducing estate bottling beginning with the 1924 vintage, at a time when most Bordeaux wines were bottled by merchants. Baron Philippe also launched Mouton Cadet in 1930, a wine created from fruit not selected for the grand vin, which later became one of the most widely known Bordeaux brands. After decades of effort to challenge the original classification, Château Mouton Rothschild was officially elevated in 1973 from Second Growth to Premier Grand Cru Classé, the only change ever made to the 1855 classification. After Baron Philippe’s death in 1988, the estate passed to his daughter Baroness Philippine de Rothschild, who continued to develop the property and the wider family wine group until her death in 2014. Today the group is overseen by her three children - Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, Camille Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, who continue to manage the Baron Philippe de Rothschild wine estates and projects worldwide.

Vinification

After hand harvesting and careful sorting, the grapes are destemmed and transferred into the fermentation vats by gravity alone, helping to preserve the integrity of the fruit.

The estate uses 64 fermentation vats in total, including 44 traditional oak vats and 20 stainless-steel vats. The vats vary in size and correspond to different vineyard parcels, allowing each parcel and grape variety to be vinified separately. After vinification, the wines are transferred to new French oak barrels for maturation, following the traditional Médoc ageing practices. During the ageing period, which lasts around twenty months, the wine undergoes regular topping-up and clarification with egg-white fining before bottling

On the nose, Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 reveals intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, and dark plum layered with notes of cedar, graphite, crushed herbs, and subtle spice from oak aging. The palate is powerful yet exceptionally balanced, offering concentrated layers of dark fruit, cassis, mocha, and fine mineral notes supported by velvety, well‑integrated tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and deeply expressive, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and nuanced complexity.

Best served at cellar temperature and decanted before serving, this Pauillac pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, grilled ribeye, rich game dishes, and aged cheeses that are perfect for refined dinners and landmark occasions.
