About The Winery

G.D. Vajra is a family-run estate rooted deeply in the hills of Barolo, both historically and philosophically. The winery takes its name from Giuseppe Domenico Vajra, the grandfather of the current generation, but its modern identity was shaped in 1972, when Aldo Vaira and his wife Milena began bottling wines under their own name. At a time when many growers were abandoning farming or selling fruit, Aldo chose to commit fully to viticulture. Remarkably, he began this path very young and later formalized it with academic training in agriculture and viticulture, an education that strongly influenced the estate’s early and enduring commitment to environmentally respectful farming.

Today, G.D. Vajra remains a true family project. Aldo and Milena are still actively involved, working alongside their children Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, who represent the second generation. From the outset, Vajra aligned itself with organic farming, becoming one of the pioneers of this approach in Barolo during the 1970s—decades before it became a market trend.

The estate is based in Vergne, a small hamlet within the commune of Barolo, positioned on the western side of the appellation. Vergne is notable for its high elevation, among the highest in Barolo, with vineyards reaching close to 400 meters above sea level. This altitude brings cooler temperatures, wider diurnal shifts, and later ripening, factors that contribute to aromatic complexity, natural acidity, and structural precision in the wines. The vineyards are planted on classic Barolo soils dominated by calcareous marl with significant clay content, providing both drainage and water retention—crucial for Nebbiolo in warm years.

On the nose, Barolo Albe reveals lifted aromas of rose petals, red cherry, and wild berries, layered with notes of licorice, spice, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is refined and vibrant, offering flavors of red fruits, gentle minerality, and well-integrated tannins supported by fresh acidity. The finish is long, smooth, and expressive, leaving lingering impressions of fruit, spice, and classic Nebbiolo character.
