About The Winery

With a degree in oenology from UC Davis and more than 30 years at the helm of one of the world’s most respected wine estates, Jean-Louis Chave would stand among the great winemakers even without his extraordinary family lineage. His Hermitage Rouge and Blanc are widely considered benchmarks of the Rhône, often compared in stature, demand, and pricing to First Growth Bordeaux and the great domaines of Burgundy.

The J.L. Chave Sélection range, however, was created with a different purpose: to offer wines that reflect the craftsmanship, typicity, and balance of the Chave style, but at a far more accessible level. These wines allow drinkers to experience the essence of the Chave philosophy in everyday moments, without the need for a special occasion

The Sélection project

Jean-Louis Chave launched the Sélection line in 1995, initially working almost entirely with purchased fruit from trusted growers, particularly in Saint-Joseph. Over time, as vineyards replanted by the Chave family matured, fruit from these parcels became an increasingly important part of the blends.

Today, Jl Chave owns 15 hectares of vines in Hermitage. 10 hectares are planted to Syrah and are used to produce Hermitage Rouge wines.

Vinification

The Sélection wines are produced using organic and biodynamic principles, combined with traditional Rhône winemaking methods and a minimal-intervention approach. Fermentations are carried out with care to preserve freshness and typicity, and élevage favors restraint over oak impact, allowing the character of each appellation to remain clear.

On the nose, Offerus reveals expressive aromas of blackberry, black cherry, and plum, layered with notes of black pepper, violet, smoked meat, and subtle earthy undertones. The palate is smooth, structured, and beautifully balanced, offering flavors of dark berries, gentle spice, and minerality supported by refined tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, leaving lingering impressions of fruit and spice.
