About The Winery

The origin of Marqués de Murrieta is closely linked to the origin of modern Rioja winemaking. In 1852, Luciano de Murrieta y García-Lemoine applied techniques learned in Bordeaux, introducing structured winemaking methods and barrel ageing that would define the future style of Rioja. By adapting Bordeaux practices to local varieties, he established a model that positioned Rioja within the framework of fine wine production and international trade.

The estate is owned by the family of Vicente Dalmau Cebrián-Sagarriga, whose wine holdings extend beyond Rioja. In addition to Marqués de Murrieta, the family owns Champagne Gosset in Aÿ, one of the oldest Champagne houses (founded in 1584), as well as Pazo de Barrantes in Rías Baixas, focused on Albariño. Together, these properties reflect a portfolio rooted in historic European wine regions and long-term family stewardship.

Today, the estate’s vineyards are concentrated in Finca Ygay, a contiguous 300-hectare estate in Rioja Alta, managed parcel by parcel and harvested by hand, maintaining full control from vineyard to bottle.

On the palate, this collection offers a rich tapestry of flavors: bright fruit core, refined spice, supple oak, and integrated tannins. The wines are harmonious yet distinctive, with graceful acidity and lingering finishes that evolve from smooth and elegant in the earlier vintages to deeper, more layered expressions in the later years.
