About The Winery

Vega Sicilia is located in Ribera del Duero in Castilla y León, near the village of Valbuena de Duero. The estate was founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, who introduced Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot to the region alongside the local Tempranillo (Tinto Fino). Since 1982 the estate has been owned by the Álvarez family, who manage the winery through the Tempos Vega Sicilia group and have overseen its international expansion while preserving the traditional style of the wines.

The estate covers around 985 hectares, of which about 210 hectares are used for wine growing, under 19 soil-types divided into 52 plots with very specific characteristics. While the rest remains woodland, pine forest and agricultural land surrounding the vineyards. The vines are planted at 700–900 metres above sea level in a continental climate with cold winters, hot summers and significant day-night temperature variation. The main variety is Tempranillo (Tinto Fino), supported by Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting the historical Bordeaux influence introduced at the founding of the estate.

Vinification

The flagship wine of the estate is Vega Sicilia Único, produced mainly from Tempranillo with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon from selected vineyard parcels. Único is renowned for its exceptionally long maturation before release. The wine spends many years maturing in a complex system of different oak vessels, including both small barriques and large wooden vats made from French and American oak, before further aging in bottle.

On the nose, Vega Sicilia Único 2006 reveals profound aromas of ripe black cherry, blackberry, and plum layered with notes of leather, tobacco leaf, cedar, dried herbs, and subtle spice.
